Novel Methods for Resource Adequacy Assessments in Renewable Dominated Electricity Systems –VeSiMa Final Project Workshop on October 26, 2023

Stochastic fluctuations in renewable infeed, electricity demand and availabilities of conventional generation pose challenges when it comes to maintaining security of supply in future climate-neutral energy systems. A reliable, data-driven quantification of these fluctuations and their interplay with storage, back-up generation and transmission is increasingly crucial for ensuring resource adequacy and assessing vulnerabilities in the electricity system.

Over the past three years, the research project VeSiMa (Versorgungssicherheit und Marktentwicklung in Deutschland im europäischen Kontext: Verknüpfung von stochastischer Versorgungssicherheitsanalyse und Marktmodellierung), has therefore developed probabilistic methods to characterise the multiple stochasticities in electricity systems and their interplay based on empirical data. These are then used in massive Monte-Carlo simulations to evaluate the security of supply in future energy systems.

In the concluding project workshop on Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 9 am to 12 am, we will present the primary project findings, emphasizing the stochastic modeling of power system uncertainties, the impact of energy storages on generation adequacy and vulnerabilities of the power system in linking generation adequacy assessment and market modeling.
